Boys Basketball: Bolts bury Republic-Michigamme
DOLLAR BAY — It’s been said that the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Blue Bolts basketball team can beat opponents many ways on the court.
Whether it is their inside game off the glass or a deep three-pointer from the top of the key, the Blue Bolts arsenal is deep. That certainly was on display Friday night as they defeated the Republic-Michigamme Hawks 72-33.
With the win, the Blue Bolts remain undefeated at 17-0.
They are tough team and they play exceptionally well all four quarters,” said Republic’s head coach Cody Carlson. “They put their shots in and we didn’t.”
Republic-Michigamme’s (1-16) best quarter was the first as they played the Blue Bolts to an 8-8 tie. However they then seemed to be stuck at eight while the Blue Bolts moved the score to 15-8 to end the first quarter.
“That has been the story of our season,” Carlson said.” We start out well and can hang with teams, but then we start to turn the ball over and the game gets out of control.”
At halftime the Blue Bolts were ahead 32-16.
“I am proud of the guys and the way they played strong defense in spite of some cold spots in our offense,” said Jesse Kentala, head coach of the Dollar Bay Blue Bolts. “Overall it was a good team effort and a strong win at home.”
Part of Dollar Bay’s defense work is to force turnovers and they did quite a bit of that on Friday night. Often, those turnovers turned into points for the Blue Bolts.
“We like to say that there are no free passes when you play us,” Kentala said. “We want teams to work for every bucket.”
The two Blue Bolts who were responsible for a lot of turnovers and a lot points were senior Ashton Janke and junior Davin Hill. Janke led the scoring with 26 points and Hill sunk 20. Both had for baskets a piece from three-point land.
The fourth quarter was the Hawks best as they scored 11 points. Senior Kolin Conklin led the charge with 10 points on the game. Eli Luokkala followed with seven.
On the schedule are just three more games left for the Blue Bolts as they go for an undefeated season. They will play Chassell on the road on Friday. Then it is off to Republic-Michigamme at their gym and then at home on March 5 against the Jeffers Jets to end the season.
