Tech’s Swoyer named WCHA Defenseman of the Week again

Michigan Tech junior defenseman Colin Swoyer was named the WCHA Defenseman of the Week for the second straight week after the team’s sweep of rival Northern Michigan.

Swoyer had two assists, both of which came in the Huskies’ 4-3 overtime win Friday in Houghton. The Huskies (4-3-1) followed that with a 3-1 win Saturday in Marquette.

Swoyer also blocked six shots and helped the team’s penalty kill successfully fend off all four Wildcats’ power plays. Swoyer’s 13 blocked shots are third in the conference and his five assists also rank third. The Huskies’ penalty kill is third in the country at 95%.

Huskies sophomore goaltender Blake Pietila didn’t win his third consecutive Goaltender of the Week award. It instead went to Bowling Green sophomore Zack Rose. Rose’s teammate Connor Ford was named Forward of the Week. Minnesota State’s Akito Hirose was named Rookie of the Week.

Tech hosts Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 2 to begin conference play.
