Houghton boys take 2nd at Powderhorn

BESSEMER — The Houghton High School boys ski team finished second at Powderhorn on Tuesday.

The boys scored 68 points in the slalom and giant slalom to finish behind Marquette’s 32 points. The Norway girls team (60) edged out Houghton (68) for second place behind Marquette (36).

The Gremlins girls took third in the giant slalom with 30 points. Ashley Lehmann led the way for Houghton with a 1:01.44. Lydia Salmi finished fourth with a run of 1:02.66.

Mqrquette’s Anna Grzelak had the fastest giant slalom run at 1:01.36.

Keegan Leonard led the Gremlins girls with a fourth-place run of 1:25.33 to help Houghton finish third in the slalom. Salmi finished second on the team and eighth overall with a run of 1:28.93.

Norway’s Gabby Carey had the fastest slalom run of 1:22.25.

The Houghton boys took third in the slalom, led by Reed Heathman’s 1:13.36 to take first place individually. Connor Kamm was second on the team and 10th overall with a run of 1:38.72.

Heathman also took first overall in the giant slalom with a run of 57.25 in leading Houghton to a second-place team finish. Mikko Salmi was second for the Gremlins and third overall with a run of 1:02.92.

“We had some good individual efforts today,” Houghton coach Larry Heathman said. “Lydia Salmi had her best results in the GS today as did Keegan Leonard in the slalom. Both the men’s and women’s teams had a temporary lacks of concentration to prevent four good scores.”

Houghton will ski the regional meet Monday, Feb. 8 at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville.
