Lakes hold off Bessemer girls for first victory

LAKE LINDEN — The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes girls basketball team stayed one step ahead of Bessemer on Tuesday, earning their first win of the season by a 50-46 score.

“Our focus tonight was on the defensive end,” said LL-H head coach Jack Johnson. “It caused the other team to play faster and in turn created a lot of turnovers for us. We’ve been working on it, and the girls did a great job on it tonight.”

The Lakes’ Kaci Destrampe opened the game’s scoring with a free throw. They followed with a press and had good ball movement to outscore the Speedgirls 21-8 in the first. However, the tables were turned in the second as the Speedgirls outshot the Lakes 16-4. The teams headed to the locker room with the Lakes up by just one at 25-24.

The Lakes (1-3) came out strong in the third scoring eight points in the first two minutes. The scoring charge was led by Destrampe’s 15 points. Melissa Wagner followed with 10.

“Kaci played pretty steady for us. She likes to attack the basket, and I have to give her a lot of credit for that. She stepped up and scored for us when we needed some buckets,” said Johnson.

The Speedgirls closed within two points at 44-42 with less than two minutes on the clock, but the Lakes Olivia Shank hit a three and changed the momentum which led to a win.

Kailyn Fingeroos was the top Bessemer scorer with 15 points. Brooke Stanislawski followed with eight.
