DOLLAR BAY — Jeffers coach John Schutz figured the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Blue Bolts would come out firing Monday night.

They did, but Jeffers managed in a 59-54 win.

“We had beaten them by 25 points just a week ago at our place,” Schutz said. “We know they would remember that one.”

In the end, the taller Jets had too much under the hoop, mainly 6-foot-5 senior Christian Hocking.

Hocking collected 15 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked five shots. His biggest rejection came in the final minute when he swatted away a Bolts shot that could have tied the game.

“Christian Hocking does that on a steady basis,” Schutz said. “He’s a dominant inside player.”

Trailing by a 35-24 margin at the break, the Blue Bolts came out strong in the third frame, getting two triples from Connor LeClaire and one from Davin Hill.

Hill warmed up in the second half, scoring 12 of his game-high 19 points over the last two quarters.

LeClaire scored 18 points of his own and was effective at defending Hocking.

The Jets, who are 10-1 on the season and in good shape from the conference, received 11 points each from John Schutz and Ashton Kunishige and 10 more from Levi Frahm.

Boys: Jeffers 68, Calumet 23

Frahm scored 17 points to lead the Jets over Calumet Tuesday. Schutz scored 13 points and Hocking scored 12.

Nathan Spence led Calumet with nine points.

Girls: Baraga 82, LL-H 24

Rylie Koskinen scored 19 points and Jaylyne Lindemann added 15 in a convincing win against Lake Linden-Hubbell on Tuesday. Allison Durant scored 12 points and Reide Osterman added 11 for the Vikings.

Taylor Clements led LL-H with nine points.

Baraga led 54-12 at halftime.

Girls: Calumet 85, Kingsford 28

The Calumet Copper Kings girls came out shooting and never looked back in their victory over the Kingsford Flivvers on Monday. Elli Djerf had an impressive 38 points for the Copper Kings including 8-13 from the three-point line. Marybeth Halonen was 3-4 with the triple and had 15 points for Calumet.

Girls: Ontonagon 62, Watersmeet 14

MaKennah Uotila scored 14 points and Teddy Menigoz added 13 in Ontonagon’s win Monday.

Annabelle Besonen led Watersmeet with six points.

Ontonagon led 38-8 at halftime.

Boys: Watersmeet 72, Ontonagon 46

Watersmeet used a big second half to pull away from a narrow halftime lead over Ontonagon on Monday. The Nimrods led 35-31 at halftime and Mitchell McGeshick scored seven of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to help seal the win against the Gladiators. Watersmeet outscored Ontonagon 18-9 in the third quarter before adding 19 points in the fourth. Ike Bramlett led Ontonagon with 13 points, Ryan Preiss scored 11 points and Reece LaBine had 10.

Ontonagon head coach Brittany Turin-Jilbert said it was the Gladiators’ first game without Luke Strasser, who’s out with a shoulder injury.

“I thought we played really well the first half,” she said. “We shot well and moved well in our defense. Our short bench hurt us in the second half leading to too many second chance opportunities for easy baskets.”

Boys: Jeffers 96, Baraga 26

The Jeffers Jets dominated their recent match up against the Baraga Vikings with a score of 96-26 on Saturday. The Jets had three players with more than 20 points each. They included Christian Hocking with 22 points. Levi Frahm followed with 21, and Johnny Schutz poured in 20 points.

For Baraga Matthew Tangen scored eight points and Steele Jondreau sunk six.

Girls: Baraga 70, Jeffers 35

Allison Durant scored 13 points to lead Baraga past Jeffers on Saturday. Jaylyne Lindemann scored 11 points for the Vikings.

“We came out strong defensively and were able to work our transition game,” Baraga coach Tom Goodreau said. “It was nice to get a lot of game time for some of our younger players.”
