Tech women reach GLIAC championship

WESTVILLE, Ind. — Michigan Tech held off a late rally by Saginaw Valley State for a 78-74 win and a berth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

The Huskies will face either Parkside or Ashland for the GLIAC championship at noon Sunday.

Friday’s game was Tech’s 17th straight win.

Ellie Mackay led the Huskies with 25 points on 9 for 13 shooting. Jordan Ludescher scored 20 points with a team-high five rebounds.

The Huskies (19-1) led 47-33 at halftime, but the Cardinals made it an eight-point game going into the fourth quarter.

Bailie McGirk scored six points in the fourth to help offset the Cardinals’ rally. Mackay scored four points in the fourth.

Kaitlyn Zarycki led SVSU with 29 points and eight rebounds.

Thursday’s game

Mackay and Ludescher scored 15 points each in a 79-52 rout of Davenport University in a quarterfinal matchup.

The Huskies scored seven unanswered points to start the game, extending their lead to 13 before the Panthers climbed back to a 39-34 deficit by halftime.

Tech sealed the game early in the third quarter after outscoring Davenport 23-8 over a 10-minute span.

Michigan Tech shot 29 for 55 (52.7%), including 6 for 14 (42.9%) on 3-pointers. The Huskies were 15 of 17 from the free-throw line.

Davenport struggled to score with 33.3% shooting (21 for 63) and just one made 3-pointer on 15 tries.
