Calumet tops St. Ignace in OT, wins regional title

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Calumet Copper Kings girls’ basketball team continued their undefeated season with a 65-55 overtime win in the MHSAA Division 3 Region 17 championship over the St. Ignace Saints on Wednesday.

The Copper Kings will take on Maple City Lake in quarterfinal action on April 5 in Houghton Lake.

It took an extra period to get it done as the two teams were tied after four at 49. It was not too surprising as both were neck and neck for most of the game.

The Copper Kings knew they had their work cut out as the extra period got underway, and their three big scorers heeded the call. Elli Djerf had four points. Marybeth Halonen, Alexis Strom and Laura Giachino all had two.

Strom scored seven points in the overtime to lead Calumet.

On the night, Halonen suck 18 point, and Djerf had 17 with three triples. Strom sunk 13.

The Saints also had three girls in double figures. Emmalee Hart led the charge with 19 points with three threes. Hallie Marshall sunk 12 and as did Ally Schaltz.

The Saints got off to a quicker start, outscoring the Copper Kings 11-6 going into the second quarter.

Calumet won the second period with a 22-16 tilt and led 28-27 at half time. The third was quite similar as it ended with a 39-39 score, and both teams scored 10 in the fourth to send the game into overtime.
