HOUGHTON — Jack Sayen, of Houghton, took home the first-place medal at the Junior Golf League Tournament Thursday at the Portage Lake Golf Course.

The 14-year-old shot a 76 on the 18-hole course. That was just four over the course’s par of 72.

“I was pleased with how I played today,” Sayen said. “My key to victory was not making high numbers.”

He added that his best hole was par-three 15 where he shot a birdie.

Sayen was one of around a dozen local teens who participated in the Junior League this summer at the Portage Lake Golf course. The league took place each Thursday beginning in June and ended on the last Thursday in July. The league is geared toward kids ages 13-17 who come out and play a number of different golf formats each week. After a final round of 18, The consensus among these golfers on Thursday was the season was too short as they enjoyed getting out and playing golf with their buddies.

“We have a lot of fun as we are all friends,” said second-place golfer Jackson Sintkowski, who carded an 80. “I’ve done better. My best whole was 15 also. I got par (three) on that one.”

Ian Hong took third place to round out the top three.

Brody Donnelly took first place in the 12-and-under golfers. He explained that the key to his success was taking the course one shot at a time.

He added that the summer on the course was a fun one and his golf game has definitely improved.

“I thought I shot every stroke well,” he said.
