Huskies complete NCAA Skiing Championships

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — The Michigan Tech Nordic Skiing squads fell short of their goals to conclude the NCAA Skiing Championships and the season at Mt. Van Hoevenberg, in Lake Placid, New York, on Saturday afternoon.

Michigan Tech finished the championships with 67 points, good for ninth-place among the 16 team field.

The Huskies were led by Anabel Needham and Skylar Patten in Saturday’s 20km classic mass start, placing 27th and 28th in their races, respectively.

“Today was super challenging snow conditions and we didn’t have the classic race day we were hoping to achieve,” said head coach Tom Monahan Smith and assistant coach Kristen Monahan Smith. “Results aside, everyone fought through the entire race and we will leave these championships proud of what we achieved as a team through this entire season.”

Michigan Tech heads back to the U.P. with second team All-American accolades for Needham, posting the fastest final 1.25km en route to her eighth-place finish.

The women of Michigan Tech started the final day of competition at the NCAA Skiing Championships, coursing the 20km classic mass start.

Needham, the Houghton native, led the Huskies with her 27th-place finish (1:06.50.1). Senior Henriette Semb (1:11.59.2) and junior Olivia Laven (1:12.02.0) placed 38th and 39th, respectively.

Behind Patten’s 28th-place finish (1:01.35.1), teammate Colin Freed was close behind, taking 31st-place (1:02.17.5). Victor, New York, native Adam Witkowski rounded out the Huskies lineup with his 40th-place finish.

The Huskies were the combined team CCSA Conference Champions and NCAA Central Regional Champions this season, along with qualifying a full team to the NCAA Skiing Championships this season.
