LAKE LINDEN — Superior Service and Gold Standard both improved to 2-1 on Monday night with wins at the Boneyard. In the first game, Superior Service did it with their bats, winning 13-1 in just five innings against Tervo Agency. In the nightcap, Gold Standard earned a 9-4 win over Superior National Bank behind pitcher Emily Jokela.

In the opener, Superior Service jumped out to a 2-1 lead after one inning and never looked back. While one run was all Tervo could muster, Superior Service went on to score six in the second, three in the third, and four in the fourth.

Swinging strong bats for the Superior Service were Josie Heinonen and Harlee Froberg. Both ladies had three RBI singles on the night, and Milly Loukus had a double and a single.

Reagan Moyle was in the circle and earned the win, striking out eight Tervo batters along the way

“Reagan pitched well throughout the game,” noted Superior’s player-coach Raili Therrian. “We had no errors in the field, and the ladies hit the ball well and were aggressive on the base paths. This one was a team effort as everyone did well and has improved so much already.”

Strong pitching was very much the key to victory in the second game on Monday, as Gold Standard earned the win.

Gold Standard’s lefthander, Jokela, had more than eight strikeouts. This included putting the Superior National Bank lineup down swinging – one, two, three – in two innings in this game. She was relieved by Payton Goldsworthy, who closed it out.

Interestingly, both hurlers swung big bats with back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning, which helped their own cause.

Goldsworthy’s was an inside-the-park blast to right field and Jokela then stepped up and tagged one to deep left center.

“They threw well, and we got some key hits when we needed them,” stated Gold Standard coach Curtis Kinnunen. “Our defense played well and that helped.”

While Superior National Bank was able to add two runs in the sixth, and one more in the seventh, to their one run scored in the first, it was not enough.
