Little League All-Stars split over weekend at Penokee Range

IRON MOUNTAIN — On Friday, the Portage Lake/Designotype Printers Little League All-Star team lost the opening game of their district tournament against Lake of the Clouds, 5-3. They responded to that loss on Sunday with a 3-2 win over Marquette.

In the tournament opener, Designotype got hits from Ridge Kero, Bryce Keteri, and Dawson Rilei. Ethan Lasanen mashed a home run as well.

On the mound, Lance Rautiola took the loss, giving up three runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings. Cal Johnson came in to relieve him, and he gave up two hits and two runs in 1 2/3 innings.

In the win over Marquette, Designotype trailed 2-1 in the bottom half of the sixth when Tyler L’Esperance got things started with a single. Keteri drew a walk. Damien Juopperi then laid down a sacrifice bunt, which moved both runners into scoring position.

Looking for a timely hit, Kero drove a ball out to left field, scoring both L’Esperance and Keteri and giving Designotype the win.

Kero, Rilei, Emmet Hainault and L’Esperance all racked up hits.

Hainault got the start on the mound, going 2 1/3 innings. He gave up a run. Johnson came in to relieve him, going 2 1/3 innings and giving up one run. Roger Pietila pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball to give the locals a chance before picking up the win.
