Portage Lake All-Stars fall in the title game

IRON MOUNTAIN — After defeating Lake of the Clouds to avenge their tournament-opening loss on Tuesday, the Portage Lake Little League All-Stars/Designotype Printers lost in the championship game Wednesday night to Negaunee.

In their battle Wednesday, Designotype “ran out of gas against a strong Negaunee team,” according to coach Dan Juopperi. The final score was 10-1.

Designotype fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, and they could not find a way to string hits together.

Blake Helminen and Dawson Rilei paced the offense with two hits each. Max Pietila, Lance Rautiola, and Cal Johnson all had one hit each.

Their lone run came in the bottom of the first inning with Helminen on base. Rilei came up with the timely hit to bring him home.

Johnson took the loss on the mound, giving up four runs over three innings of work. Roger Pietila, Rautiola, and Ethan Lasanen all combined in relief to give up six runs over three innings of work.

In Tuesday’s win over Lake of the Clouds, Lasasen was a key piece of the puzzle, racking up his second home run of the tournament as Designotype won, 19-3.

Emmet Hainault, Helminen, Rilei, Tyler L’Esperance, and Johnson all had two hits each.

On the mound, Johnson earned the win. Pietila, Hainault, and Bryce Keteri all pitched in relief.

Starting at $2.99/week.
