Huskies soccer bounces back with offensive barrage at Roosevelt Sunday
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. — The Michigan Tech Huskies soccer team turned the corner on a two-game losing streak with a convincing 6-0 thumping of first-year GLIAC affiliate Roosevelt at Morris Field on Sunday. The win marked the highest scoring game for the Black and Gold since Sept. 12, 2021, and the third shutout of the year.
The Huskies close out the first conference road weekend of the season with an overall record of 4-3 and 2-2 in the loop while the Lakers drop to 0-4-2 overall and 0-3 in the GLIAC. Veterans Julia Pietila and Kiersen Korienek each recorded a season-high four points.
“So proud of this group and the response after a tough loss Friday. It was a total team effort. We put together a solid 90 minute game and were able to get a lot of players minutes which is good for our program and the growth we continue to strive for,” Huskies coach Melissa Kuhar said. “Our offense was clicking and it was nice getting some different players on the stat sheet! Can’t complain about our offense scoring six goals and even more proud of a clean sheet.”
The Huskies opened the scoring in the 11th minute with Kiersen Korienek heading a corner kick by Grace Hoeppner past the Lakers’ defense to take an early 1-0 lead.
Michigan Tech rattled off three more goals in their highest-scoring game of the season in the opening period with a pair of goals from Julia Pietila, now with a team-leading six goals on the year and the first goal of the season by sophomore Brooke Green (34th minute). Bella Vasoli earned her first career assist, chipping the ball back to Green deep into the six for an open shot at the net.
Pietila, the Hartland, Michigan, native scored twice in the span of 12 minutes, with the first coming at the 16:42 mark off a cross by Korienek beating the Lakers goalkeeper from the far side. Her following score came off a bicycle kick with her back to the net deep in Lakers territory, with Korienek again there for the assist.
The Huskies followed up the offensive outburst in the first 45 minutes with two more goals in the final 45 as the Huskies amassed 10 shots and five corners in the second period as Ludesha Reynolds appeared in the net.
Pietila added to her point total in the second half with an assist on senior Taylor Noble’s first goal of the season with Pietila firing a pass directly to Noble, who buried the shot in front of the Laker’s net in the 52nd minute to make it 5-0.
The frosting on the cake for Michigan Tech was fifth-year defender Molly Bolang scoring her first career goal in her 74th game for the Black and Gold. Bolang beat her defender and fired a shot from well outside the box, which hit the far post before trickling into the net to conclude the goal-scoring at 6-0.
Pietila recorded a season-high four shots, with Emilie Clayton and Taylor Noble adding three apiece. Ludesha Reynolds recorded a save and joined Bri Barrows for the combined shutout.
