Roundup: Jets sweep, Gremlins split, Copper Kings fall in busy hockey weekend
Three of the four local high school hockey teams were in action over the weekend.
The Jeffers Jets earned a pair of wins over the weekend, one over Byron Center and the other over host Sault Ste. Marie. The Houghton Gremlins split in Grand Rapids, defeating East Grand Rapids before falling to Grandville. The Calumet Copper Kings dropped a game to Escanaba on Friday.
Jets sweep in Soo
SAULT STE. MARIE — The Jets defeated Byron Center Friday at Big Bear Arena in Sault Ste. Marie Friday, 4-1.
The two teams skated to a 1-1 tie after one period. The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the second, but the Jets (7-1 overall) struck three times in the third to earn the win.
Tage Rajala got the Jets on the board with a goal 56 seconds into the game. His unassisted tally was his third of the year.
The Bulldogs answered just under two minutes later, then struck 6:09 into the second. They pushed out to a 3-1 lead 10:46 into the third.
Cameron Anderson pulled the Jets back into the game with just 2:44 left. His ninth goal of the year was assisted by Blake Heltunen.
Brogan Turner then tied the game 19 seconds later when he scored his 11th of the year. Griffin Heinonen earned the lone assist on the play.
Then Heinonen buried a shot seven seconds later to put the Jets ahead for good. The game-winning goal was his first tally of the season.
Kasen Helminen stopped 27 to earn the win for the Jets.
Saturday, the Jets scored twice in the first and three times in the third to defeat the Blue Devils, 6-1.
Reese Laitala opened the scoring 6:50 in when he scored his first goal. Rajala and Anderson assisted on the play.
Heltunen struck for the second time this season at 7:45 to put the Jets up 2-0. Max Nordstrom and Cade Coponen assisted on the tally.
Easton Therrian made it 3-0 Jets 9:01 into the middle frame. Heinonen and Carson L’Esperance earned assists.
Hudsen Heinonen scored his second goal of the season 8:30 into the third to extend the lead to 4-0. Coponen and Ryan Turpeinen assisted on the goal.
After the Blue Devils got a goal from Griffin Greeley seven seconds later, the two teams remained locked in a 4-1 game until Rajala scored his second of the weekend with 2:18 left. Anderson and Laitala assisted.
Coponen scored his second of the game 21 seconds later to seal the win. Turpeinen and Heltunen both earned assists.
Helminen made 17 saves to earn the win.
Gremlins split in Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Gremlins topped the East Grand Rapids Pioneers on Friday, 2-1, at the Patterson Ice Center.
Brody Donnelly scored just 25 seconds into the game. Noah Mailllette and Connor Arko both assisted on the goal to give the Gremlins (4-3-1 overall) a 1-0 lead. The goal was Donnelly’s second of the year.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of the Gremlins into the third period before Trevor Bird struck to even things for the Pioneers just 17 seconds into the frame. The goal was a power play marker.
With the game appearing headed for overtime, Maillette found the back of the net with just 18 seconds left to lift the Gremlins to the win. Arko and Donnelly both assisted on the goal.
Cooper Flachs earned the win.
Saturday morning, the Gremlins scored twice in the first period and once in the second, but could not keep the Grandville Bulldogs from scoring twice in the third to skate away with a 4-3 win.
Maillette got the Gremlins on the board 10:02 into the game. Arko picked up the lone assist.
The Bulldogs answered with 2:35 left, but Mason Soli scored his first career goal 1:28 later to put Houghton back in the lead. Wesley Mattila earned the assist.
Calvin Rinkinen then scored his first goal with 2:11 left in the second period to put Houghton up 3-1. The power play goal was assisted by Ian Hembroff and Soli.
However, the Bulldogs struck again 38 seconds later to pull within one at 3-2.
Grandville got goals from Chase Fitton, his second straight in the game, and Kaleb Anderson in the third to earn the win.
Flachs made 24 saves in the loss.
Copper Kings fall in Escanaba
ESCANBA — The Eskymos scored twice in the first period, once in the second and three times in the third to earn a 6-1 win over the Copper Kings Friday.
Nick Martinson and Chase Korpi scored 3:16 apart to put Escanaba ahead before the end of the opening frame.
Graham Johnson struck in the second to put the Eskymos up 3-0 before the midpoint of the game.
The Copper Kings (3-2-1 overall) got on the board when Lewis Nagel scored his first goal of the season at 11:05. Ben Anderson and Nathan Londo both earned assists.
Johnson scored twice more in the third after Ben Sands scored at 4:17 to cap the scoring for Escanaba.
Beau Jukuri made 23 saves in the loss.
