Winter road conditions varied with first snow

While the southern part of the Copper Country got its first dose of winter driving Monday morning, Keweenaw County did not receive as much snow as its neighbors to the south. Sheriff Curt Pennala said his office did not receive any calls of mishaps, crashes or motorists in trouble. “For us the numbers were low,” Pennala said Tuesday morning. “It seems people were traveling carefully.” Most of the higher amounts of snowfall and the slushiness stayed to the south, he said. “We did get a little bit of it up here, but not a ton of it,” he said. Trees missing following Hecla cemetery cleanup

CALUMET TOWNSHIP — For a number of years Ruth Gleckler has led a group of volunteers in cleaning up the Hecla Cemetery, on Cemetery Street, removing brush, clearing walking paths through the cemetery, and working to preserve head stones. On September 23, her group conducted another round of cleanup, this time with the aid of the Michigan Technological University Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. LBFE holds annual food drive

HANCOCK — This Saturday, residents are being asked to leave out food in the morning to help out area seniors as part of Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly’s annual food drive. Members of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brothers will be picking up bags in Atlantic Mine, Calumet, Chassell, Dollar Bay, Hancock, Houghton, Lake Linden, Laurium and South Range.
