Car of Hancock man found

HANCOCK — Police found the car Tuesday afternoon of a Hancock man whose body was recovered in the Portage Canal five months after he was reported missing.

The 1996 Oldsmobile Bravada belonging to Duane Kangas, 38, was found in the canal near Birch Street. It was pulled from the canal about 1:30 p.m. The search on the canal began Monday, including aid from the Michigan State Police Dive Team.

Kangas had last been seen in November, when he was spotted leaving a Houghton gas station in the car. Kayakers spotted his body in the Portage Canal near the Kestner Waterfront Park in April.

An autopsy was performed on Kangas’s body April 30. Results have yet to be released.

Hancock police had no further information on the case Tuesday afternoon.
