Two arrested in UPSET drug bust

HOUGHTON — Another person was arrested Thursday in connection with a Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) drug investigation.

The 28-year-old Milwaukee, Wisconsin, man was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over by police behind the Daily Mining Gazette Thursday afternoon. Detectives first arrested the driver, a 31-year-old man who had been the subject of a two-month investigation. The man has no fixed address, said Michigan State Police Det. Sgt. Jason Wickstrom; his last known address was in Hancock. Both men had come up from the Milwaukee area prior to the alleged transaction, Wickstrom said.

Both suspects were arrested on charges relating to the distribution of heroin and methamphetamine.

Detectives developed probable cause to show the Hancock man was involved in distributing heroin and crystal methamphetamine, an UPSET release said.

After the traffic stop, officers also found heroin and crack cocaine, as well as a digital scale, UPSET said. The material was found in a storage compartment in the side door, Wickstrom said.

“After we had the vehicle towed, we got a search warrant for the car, and that stuff was found in the car,” he said.

Both suspects were lodged in the Houghton County Jail. The report was forwarded to the Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office. The two men had not been arraigned as of Friday afternoon, according to the 97th District Court.

Additional charges and arrests are pending, detectives said.
