TORCH LAKE TOWNSHIP — A Torch Lake Township home was destroyed in a Saturday evening fire.

The fire destroyed Gary Kangas’s home on Louis Point Road as well as a adjacent garage and outbuilding. Neighbor Brian Bekkala’s home also suffered heat damage, said Bootjack Fire Chief Dan Sarazin. The fire was reported at 8:40 p.m. Saturday.

High winds made combatting the fire more difficult, Sarazin said. The departments also had to contend with downed power lines near the home.

Multiple firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion. One Bootjack firefighter was treated at the scene by first responders before Mercy EMS transported him to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. He was released early Sunday morning, Sarazin said.

Assisting Bootjack were Lake Linden, Hubbell, Tamarack City and Calumet Township fire departments. Also assisting were Bootjack First Responders, Mercy EMS and Michigan State Police.
