Single-vehicle crash results in fatality
A 59-year-old Portage Township man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Superior Road near Boundary Road in Portage Township.
According to a release from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 2:30 p.m., deputies responded to the crash, where Steven Long had lost control of his vehicle. When his passenger side tires went off the road, and he overcorrected his steering, causing the vehicle to travel across the road.
It then traveled through the ditch approximately 15 feet, when it struck a culvert. The vehicle bounced over the culvert, and a driveway, then traveled through a residential yard approximately 75 feet, before striking a large tree in the yard.
The crash caused significant damage to the vehicle, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the accident. He was extracted from the vehicle by Hurontown Fire and Rescue Jaws of Life.
The incident is still under investigation. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, the release states.
The Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Houghton City Police, the Hurontown Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance, and Superior Service Towing.
