Early H-PT numbers up

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette— Superintendent Doreen Kramer, center, gives early enrollment numbers at Monday’s Houghton-Portage Township Schools Board meeting.

HOUGHTON — Early numbers show a higher student count at Houghton-Portage Township Schools after a drop last year.

The district is at 1,448 students, up from 1,412 at the same point in 2018, said Superintendent Doreen Kramer.

“Last year, we were down from the year before, so I feel like it’s a little bit of a balancing out,” she said.

The elementary school is at 670 students, versus 638 last year, while the high school jumped from 447 to 471. Middle school numbers declined from 327 to 307.

The increases were spread out across grade levels rather than relying on a large incoming class, Kramer said.

Numbers can still shift over the next three weeks as families move in or out of the district, Kramer said.

“This is a flexible time,” she said.
