One injured in car crash, fire
TORCH LAKE TOWNSHIP — One person was injured in a single-vehicle accident that culminated in a car fire Saturday morning.
The crash occurred about 6:45 a.m., when a 26-year-old Houghton man was traveling south on Baulman Road in Torch Lake Township at a high speed. Coming over a hill near Nightingale Road, he encountered a curve.
After hitting the brakes, he skidded 170 feet to a grassy area. From there, the car went another 150 feet until colliding with a tree. The vehicle then caught fire.
The driver was able to escape the car on his own. When the Dollar Bay Fire Department responded to the scene, the car was fully engulfed in flames.
Mercy EMS transported the driver to UP Health System-Portage hospital for further evaluation.
