Ken Steiner tribute concert raises money for Little Brothers

HOUGHTON -- The Third Annual Ken Steiner Memorial Benefit Concert is scheduled to take place this Friday at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Michigan Technological University in Houghton. The event raises money for Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly in memory of Steiner, a local musician, cook, bird watcher, and long-time Little Brothers volunteer who passed away in 2017.
"Ken was a volunteer with Little Brothers from our very beginning here in 1982," said Kathy Aten of Little Brothers. "Ken was such a wonderful volunteer. We miss him every day."
In previous years, the concert has raised as much as $5,000. Aten hopes to use the funds raised this year to upgrade the kitchen facilities in the organization's twenty-year-old Hancock location.
"Ken cooked for us all year-round, and that was such a wonderful skill that he shared," said Aten. "Most people in the area who knew him remember him for his love of music and his love of cooking."
A number of local organizations are involved in hosting the event, according to a Press Release shared with the Gazette. The Rozsa Center opens their space to the performances. The MTU Visual and Performing Arts Department are involved in logistics and technical aspects and have performed in the past as part of the benefit. MTU Dining Services contrived to catering and service organization Mu Beta Psi helps out. Also involved are 5th & Elm Coffee House, the Bonfire Bar & Grill, and Roy's Pasties & Bakery.
Music will also be performed by some of Steiner's former friends and band-mates including The Steve Jones Trio, Keweenaw Brew Grass, Bob Hiltunen Allstars, and Uncle Pete's BBQ Blues Band with special guest John Pfieffer. There will also be good and a cash bar. Tickets are available for $20, with donations also accepted, though that's not the only way to contribute.
"If people can't make the concert but want to contribute, they can make a donation in Ken's memory," said Aten.

Tickets will also be available at the Box Office in the Rozsa Center on the evening of the event. Doors open at 6 p.m. with music starting at 6:30 p.m.
