Morning car crash in Portage Township

A Wednesday morning, two-vehicle crash on M-26, at the intersection of the Canal Road, in Portage Township sent one man to the hospital, according to the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department.

At 7:35 a.m., a 2019 Buick Enclave, driven by Norbert Verville, 83, of Stanton Township, was attempting to make a lefthand turn off of the Canal Road onto M-26, and did not properly yield at the posted stop sign. Verville’s Buick struck a 2013 Dodge Caravan being driven by Marne Anderson, 50, of Calumet, as she was traveling southbound on M-26.

Anderson was not injured in the crash, but Verville was transported from the scene by Mercy Ambulance to Portage Health Systems Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Department at the scene were the Houghton and Hancock Police departments, Houghton and Hurontown fire departments, Mercy Ambulance, and Superior Towing. Seat belts were worn by both drivers, but the news release did not mention citations or tickets, or whether the crash is under further investigation.
