911 out for several hours

MARQUETTE — An equipment malfunction caused a 911 outage throughout parts of Michigan for several hours Friday morning.

The outage began around 2:30 a.m., Friday, affecting about 40 counties. Service was restored about 7:15 a.m.

David McCartney, general manager for Peninsula Fiber Network of Marquette, said something had caused a piece of its fiberoptic equipment to lose power on both its primary and backup feeds. When it came back on, the equipment started broadcasting information on the network that caused it to shut down intermittently, he said.

The outage had not been the result of an upgrade or maintenance issue, as had been stated in an earlier release, McCartney said.

“PFN had no network upgrade or software upgrade going on,” he said.

What caused that to happen is still being determined. McCartney said he is talking to the equipment manufacturer and power suppliers.

“We are committed to making sure every 911 call gets through to the correct answering point with as much information as we can,” he said.
