Biden, Trump sweep Copper Country primaries

HOUGHTON — Joe Biden and President Donald Trump won their primary races in all Copper Country counties – and all counties in Michigan – while all local ballot measures passed.

Results from Tuesday’s election are below.

Houghton County

Turnout for Tuesday’s election in Houghton County was 27.4%.

Presidential race

Biden led the Democratic primary with 2,171 votes, while Bernie Sanders received 2,005, his narrowest loss in the Copper Country. Tulsi Gabbard, the other Democratic candidate still in the race, received 37. Forty-nine voters were uncommitted. There were also two unresolved write-in votes.

Receiving votes among candidates who dropped out were Elizabeth Warren (89), Mike Bloomberg (76), Amy Klobuchar (49), Pete Buttigieg (39), Andrew Yang (8), Michael Bennet (3), Joe Sestak (2), Cory Booker (1), Tom Steyer (1) and Marianne Williamson (1). Julian Castro and John Delaney received no votes.

In the Republican primary, Trump received 1,837 votes, well ahead of challenger Bill Weld (15). Additional votes went to former candidates Joe Walsh (15) and Mark Sanford (8). Sixty-two voters were uncommitted. There were three unresolved write-in votes.

Village of Calumet

Voters approved the Ordinance 154 referendum 77 to 67. The ordinance transfers some duties of elected officials to an appointed manager.

Village of Copper City

Voters approved a five-year, 0.5-mill levy on all taxable property within the village for fire protection, 29 to 14.

Duncan Township

Voters approved a four-year, 0.8943-mill renewal of the general township operating millage 61 to 5. Voters approved a four-year, 1.7889-mill renewal for fire protection, purchasing and housing fire motor vehicles, apparatus, and equipment, and for the building, maintenance and operation of the same 60 to 5. The second fire millage renewal, a four-year, 0.4715-mill renewal for fire protection, purchasing, housing and maintaining fire trucks apparatus and fire hall updates, upgrades and operation, passed 60 to 6. A four-year, 0.9432-mill renewal for the operation of Sonco and Bay ambulance companies passed 63 to 2.

Portage Township

An eight-year, 2-mill levy for road and street repair passed 482 to 215. a eight-year, 1-mill renewal for the Hurontown and Otter Lake fire departments passed 545 to 152. A eight-year, 0.5-mill levy for the Hurontown and Otter Lake fire departments passed 472 to 221.

Quincy Township

A five-year, 0.9986-mill renewal for the general township operating millage passed 40 to 10. A five-year, 0.9986-mill renewal for fire protection passed 44 to 7.

Stanton Township

A four-year, 2-mill renewal for general operating purposes for the Stanton Township and Toivola fire departments passed 290 to 50.

Baraga County

Presidential election

In the Democratic primary, Biden (441) defeated Sanders (280) and Gabbard (11). Several candidates who dropped out received votes: Bloomberg (12), Klobuchar (12), Warren (10), Buttigieg (9), Bennet (2), Yang (2) and Steyer (1). Booker, Castro, Delaney, Sestak and Williamson received no votes. Eighteen voters were uncommitted.

On the Republican side, Trump (650) defeated Weld (2). Former candidates Sanford (3) and Walsh (2) also received votes. Sixteen voters were uncommitted.

Local millages

Covington Township

The 1-mill, five-year recreation proposal passed 78 to 18. The 1-mill, five-year ambulance and fire proposal passed 83 to 13.

L’Anse Township

The 1-mill, four-year ambulance renewal passed 633 to 88. The 1-mill, four-year fire protection renewal passed 641 to 81.

Spurr Township

The 2.25-mill, five-year garbage millage passed 93 to 7. The 2-mill, five-year road millage passed 86 to 14. The .35-mill, four-year cemetery millage passed 69 to 31.

Keweenaw County

Presidential election

In the Democratic primary, Biden led with 232 votes, putting him ahead of Sanders (153) and Gabbard (10). Among dropped-out candidates, Buttigieg (17), Bloomberg (13), Klobuchar (12) and Warren (4) received votes. Nine voters were uncommitted.

In the Republican primary, Trump received all 189 votes for active candidates. Mark Sanford (3) and Joe Walsh (1) received other votes despite having dropped out. Eight voters were uncommitted.

Ontonagon County

Presidential election

On the Democratic side, Biden (479) defeated Sanders (271) and Gabbard (5). Dropped-out candidates receiving votes were Michael Bloomberg (33), Warren (16), Buttigieg (14), Booker (2), Steyer (1) and Williamson (1). There were 25 uncommitted voters and two unresolved write-ins.

In the Republican primary, Trump beat Weld 602 to 4. Walsh received 3, and Sanford 1. There were 15 uncommitted votes.

Interior Township

The 0.5-mill, four-year general fund millage renewal passed 51 to 28.
