Finlandia student tests positive for COVID-19

HANCOCK — A Finlandia University student tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend after baseline testing being done as students return for the fall semester, the university said Monday.

The student has been moved to a quarantine dorm on campus, said Olivia Myers, director of marketing and communications for Finlandia. Under Western Upper Peninsula Health Department guidelines, the student will be quarantined for 10 days, said Erin Barnett, dean of students at Finlandia.

During move-in, students had a 15-minute window to check in, then 30 minutes to move into the room, Barnett said. Following that, they were tested at the Finnish-American Heritage Center, then quarantined in their room until their test came back.

“We had that process in place so if they were in a situation like this, they wouldn’t be interacting with the community,” Barnett said.

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department conducted contact tracing for the roommate after the positive test, Barnett said.

Finlandia announced last week the first week of classes would be remote to ensure all baseline tests could be processed before classes started. In-person instruction is planned to resume the second week of school.

Testing of symptomatic students will be done throughout the school year, Myers said.

Before students leave their room or come to campus, they must complete a daily COVID-19 symptom tracker survey, Barnett said. Those results go to a nurse practitioner from Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center; depending on if the person is a student or staff, they will also go to Barnett or to the human resources department. They will then follow up with the person to determine if follow-up testing is needed.

Prior to this weekend, one member of the Finlandia University community had tested positive since the start of the epidemic. That person has since recovered, according to Finlandia’s website.
