Driver accused of fatal OWI bound over

L’ANSE — The driver in an alleged July drunk-driving crash that killed one of her passengers was bound over to Baraga County Circuit Court Tuesday.

Wendy Liuska, 48, appeared in 97th District Court via Zoom Tuesday. She voluntarily waived her scheduled preliminary hearing. If convicted, she could serve up to 15 years in prison.

Her first circuit court appearance was set for 1 p.m. Thursday.

The July 31 crash occurred near the Pines Convenience Store, where Luiska allegedly turned into the path of a pickup truck while heading to the station’s parking lot. David Savard, 54, was pronounced dead at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. Liuska and her 4-year-old son were treated and released.

Liuska also faces a misdemeanor count of operating while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle. The matter was continued for another hearing within 45 days.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Prosecutor Joseph O’Leary dropped another misdemeanor charge of operating with a high blood alcohol content.
