Lake Linden reconfirms COVID learning plan

LAKE LINDEN — Lake linden-Hubbell Public Schools reconfirmed its extended COVID learning plan at its meeting Monday.

Students still have a choice of in-person or virtual education. About 25 students opted out of face-to-face at the middle-high school and 20 in elementary, Superintendent Brad Codere said.

With two students testing positive, the district had about 40 quarantined students, Codere said. They are slated to return to school on Friday.

“That was not a fun day,” he said. “Those were not fun phone calls to make. For the most part, all the parents have been good and understanding. At least we had the ability to transition them into doing something that we’re more prepared to do than before.”

In one case, a family with one student who was quarantined kept another two children home for remote learning as a precaution.

Parent-teacher conferences were held last week via phone, email or virtually. Percentages were in line with what had been seen for the three prior years, Codere said. Most elementary school classes reached 100% of the families, Elementary Coordinator Jack Johnson said.

Higher levels of the spelling bee have been canceled, but the district will still do a school spelling bee and district bee with Dollar Bay, Johnson said. There will be a voucher system for the district bee and only parents will be able to attend.

The district will also not be participating in the geography bee. National Geographic, which sponsors the bee, has said 75% of schools will not be participating this year, Johnson said.

For the Christmas music program, the school is planning a “Home for Christmas” theme. The music director will work with the web publishing class to distribute it to families, whether through a DVD or a YouTube video.

Instead of the customary School Forest Night, classes went out to the site with Michigan Tech for about two hours.

BHK Child Development is still looking for a site coordinator for afterschool programming, Johnson said. BHK anticipates starting after 2021.

The Halloween parade went on as usual, although it was streamed on Facebook Live instead of having community members in the building.

The elementary school also installed new touchless water bottle fillers in the lobby, Codere said.

Most teachers have plastic cups on hand if students forget their bottle, while the office also has disposable cups, Johnson said. He suggested reaching out to local businesses or those part of a larger chain to see if they could donate more cups.
