HOUGHTON — A Chassell man was killed in a one-vehicle rollover crash in Portage Township Sunday night.

The crash occurred on Superior Road near Haapapuro Road, where Michigan State Police Calumet Post troopers responded around 9:40 p.m., according to an MSP press release. Rodney Barnes, 50, was driving south on Superior Road when he lost control of the vehicle on the icy roadway, the MSP said. The vehicle then slid sideways into the ditch area, where it overturned and struck a tree.

Barnes, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash has yet to be determined, Sgt. Russell Larson said Monday.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Houghton City Police Department, Hurontown Fire and Rescue, Mercy Ambulance, and Superior Service Towing.
