Man pulled out of ice near Breakers

STANTON TOWNSHIP — A 22-year-old Macomb County man was rescued from Lake Superior this weekend after he fell through the ice near the break wall, according to a release.

At 8:15 p.m. Sunday, deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Stanton Township Park to the scene, where the man was holding on to the break wall, while another male on the break wall had witnessed the Macomb man fall into the water.

The male was pulled from the water onto the break wall using a rope. Deputies and and a Michigan DNR Conservation Officer used ropes to assist both people along the icy break wall back to the shore.

The 22-year-old man was transported to UP Health System Portage hospital by Mercy Ambulance for treatment of hypothermia.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by Mercy EMS, Stanton Township First Responders and Michigan DNR conservation officer.
