MTU student killed in crash

MICHIGAMME TOWNSHIP — A Michigan Technological University student was killed in a three-car crash in Michigamme Township Saturday night.

Charlotte Jenkins, a third-year computer engineering student from Fenton, was on her way back to Tech at the time of the crash, Tech said in a message to students Sunday night.

The crash occurred about 6 p.m., when Jenkins lost control of her Pontiac Aztec westbound on U.S. 41 and collided with two eastbound vehicles, the Michigan State Police said. The passenger, a 19-year-old woman from Fenton, was taken to UP Health System — Marquette for treatment of serious injuries, the MSP said. Two other drivers were transported to UP Health System — Bell for treatment.

At Tech, Jenkins was involved in residence education and housing services and served as the resident assistant for the Women in Engineering community in McNair Hall, the letter to students said.

“We offer our deepest condolences to Charlotte’s family, friends, loved ones, and all those who were part of her community here at Tech,” Interim Dean of Students Joe Cooper and Vice President for Student Affairs Joe Cooper said in the message to students. “Losing someone we care about is incredibly difficult, and I ask that we do our best to support each other during this challenging time.”

Counseling services are available to students, Cooper said.
