Multi-vehicle crash claims one life

HOUGHTON — A three-vehicle personal injury accident (PIA) on Friday afternoon caused the death of one driver, injured another, and closed M-26 between the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and Sharon Avenue for several hours.

According to the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to scene on Memorial Road, near the Houghton Canal Road at approximately 12:30 p.m.

A preliminary investigation determined that that a passenger vehicle, driven by David Sundberg, 73, of Ahmeek, was southbound on M-26 near the Canal Road, when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed into the path of a northbound Houghton Building Supply delivery truck driven by 56-year-old Leroy Bonds, of Hubbell.

According to a Friday release from the Sheriff’s Office, Bonds tried to avoid the passenger vehicle, but could not. Sundberg’s vehicle was then struck by another vehicle driven by a 66-year-old male who was not identified.

Sundberg had to be extracted from his vehicle by the Hurontown Fire/Rescue Jaws of Life. Both he and the delivery truck driver, Bonds, were transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital by Mercy Ambulance for treatment.

The release added that the crash caused multiple other vehicle crashes within the vicinity.

An update release was issued on Saturday stating that Sundberg passed away from his injuries sustained in the crash. Bonds was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Speed, poor visibility, and poor/icy road conditions were contributing factors in the crash. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, the Friday release states. The crash remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were: Houghton City Police, Hancock City Police, MTU Public Safety/Police Services, Houghton City Fire Department, Hurontown Fire/Rescue, Mercy Ambulance, Dave’s Towing, and Superior Towing Service.
