Friday snowmobile crash claims an Ohio man

CALUMET TOWNSHIP — A Friday afternoon collision between a motor vehicle and a snowmobile claimed the life of the snowmobiler, according to the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 3:45 p.m. on Friday, March 5, deputies responded to the crash, which occurred at the U.S. 41/Trail No. 17 crossing, north of Calumet. A snowmobile, , driven by a 49-year-old man from Ohio, crossed into the path of a vehicle traveling south on U.S. 41, driven by a 33-year-old female from Ahmeek.

The snowmobile operator was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. Speed was believed to be a factor in the incident, and the investigation is ongoing, the release stated. No other details were released.

Deputies were assisted by Laurium Police, Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Calumet Township Fire Department and First Responders, Mercy EMTs, and Superior Towing Service.
