Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette Firefighters respond to a fire on College Avenue in Houghton Sunday night.

HOUGHTON — There were no injuries in a house fire on College Avenue in Houghton Sunday night.

The fire is reported to have started in the kitchen area, said Mike Reynolds, chief of the Houghton Fire Department. Firefighters arrived on scene at about 5:30 p.m. and saw smoke coming out of the eaves, said Reynolds.

“We actually tried to take an interior tack, but there was so much clutter in the house that we couldn’t get in,” he said.

The house is believed to be a total loss.

Traffic was closed on College Avenue at Prospect Street until the road was reopened around 12 a.m., the Michigan Department of Transportation said.

Other agencies responding included Hurontown Fire & Rescue, Houghton Police Department and Michigan Tech Public Safety.
