Number of LL-H virtual students trending down

LAKE LINDEN — The number of virtual students at Lake Linden-Hubbell Elementary School has continued to decrease, Elementary Coordinator Jack Johnson said at the monthly Board meeting Monday.

The number was at 16 as of last Monday, Johnson said; another one or two may be opting to come back.

“I would guess in the next couple of weeks that drops down to the low teens,” he said.

About 70% of this year’s fourth- and fifth-grade class made the honor roll, Johnson said. There are also 13 boys and 14 girls participating in elementary basketball. Students had a number of Reading Month activities; every elementary student received a book through the elementary-school Parent-Teacher Organization and Lake Linden Lions Club.

Student activities being planned include field trips to the Calumet Waterworks for basketball and Ultimate Frisbee, a half-day at the Quincy Mine Hoist and a half-day at the school forest to hear a presenter from lower Michigan who will bring raptors.

Open houses will be done online this year, with teachers sharing pictures and videos of the work being done in the class, Superintendent Brad Codere said. Those will be included in three separate videos for the elementary, middle and high school.

In other action, the board:

* Recognized student-athletes for honors earned during the 2020-21 basketball season: Second Team-All Copper Country Division for William Lyons and Marcus Sutherland and honorable mention for Kaci Destrampe.

* Approved former Superintendent Craig Sundblad as the 2021 commencement speaker.

* Approved awarding up to $2,000 in Margaret Jones Scholarships for the 2020-21 school year.

* Approved awarding up to $2,500 in Irving Chandler Scholarships for 2020-21.

* Accepted the letter of resignation from Ken Codere from the maintenance/bus driver position.

* Approved hiring Ellen Jarvis as junior high track coach for 2020-21.

* Approved hiring Brett Poissant as varsity golf coach for 2020-21.

* Approved the reconfirmation of the district’s extended COVID learning plan.
