Woman shot by police in Monday incident

HUBBELL — Police are investigating the shooting of a Hubbell woman by officers responding to a report of shots fired at the house Monday night.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post and Houghton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home about 9:15 p.m. Monday, according to a release from the MSP.

Officers encountered a 28-year-old woman outside the house with a gun, the MSP said.

In a video posted online by a bystander, officers are heard yelling “Drop the gun!’ at a person coming out of the house. The person, who appeared to be carrying a pistol, repeatedly yelled back “F—ing shoot,” “shoot me” and “I’m going to f—— blow my brains out.”

She turned and began walking back into the house, as officers yelled, “Do not go into that house.” As she approached the front door, officers fired what sounded to be seven shots from the street, hitting her.

Officers had feared for the safety of an elderly woman inside the house, the MSP said in a release. Officers administered first aid prior to the arrival of EMS, the MSP said. The shooting victim was transported to a local hospital, where she remained Tuesday afternoon, according to the release. The MSP had no update on her condition Tuesday, said Lt. Mark Giannunzio, public information officer for the Eighth District.

Detectives from the Michigan State Police Seventh District Investigative Response Team are conducting a full investigation into the shooting, the MSP said. Under department protocol, the troopers involved were placed on administrative leave while the investigation is finished. The officers are not being named, Giannunzio said.

The investigation will be forwarded to the Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office for review when complete, the MSP said.

“We try to do it as quick as possible, but we want to make sure that it’s as accurate as can be, especially in this kind of situation,” Giannunzio said.
