Deputies rescue two stranded in Copper Harbor
GRANT TOWNSHIP — Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Deputies on Friday, July 23, responded to a report of two people who had become stranded on the northeast portion of Porter’s Island in Copper Harbor, after their inflatable boat was overtaken by high seas.
“They were very cold by the time we got to them,” said Sheriff Curt Pennala, adding that they had been out in the wind and rain for a number of hours before deputies reached them.
Pennala said the two were exploring with their raft when the weather “went south” on them.
The two people beached their craft on the northeast side of Porter Island, and the wave action in that section of the harbor was at three-four foot seas, Pennala said.
Fort Wilkins personnel boarded a private vessel but were unable to land their boat, because of the rough seas, said Pennala. Deputies were able to bring the two unidentified people back to the shore of the mainland using their Sea-Doo rescue watercraft.
Pennala said the Sheriff’s Office would like to remind boaters to pay attention to the marine forecast when making plans for outings.
