Dresch, Sorvisto appear in court

WASHINGTON — Both Copper Country residents charged with participating in the storming of the U.S. Capitol appeared in federal court for hearings Friday.

Karl Dresch of Calumet is charged with five counts, including a felony charge of obstructing an official proceeding. Jeremy Sorvisto of Hancock faces four misdemeanor counts.

The government made a plea offer last month in the Dresch case, his attorney Jerry Smith said in Friday’s hearing. Although he is still considering it, Smith anticipates it will be rejected.

While Smith said the government had told him there would be no counteroffer, Judge Amy Berman Jackson encouraged Smith to try anyway.

“I think in some cases they are finally moving forward to try to resolve this … I’m not going to get in the middle of it, but if there’s something that’s acceptable to you, I don’t see why it’s not worth presenting it to (Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer) Blackwell,” she said.

The government is still compiling a database of security footage from that day, which so far amounts to more than 14,000 hours of footage, Blackwell said. She said the government had done “a fairly diligent job of looking and identifying Mr. Dresch within those videos,” which are being shared with the defense.

Dresch sought more time to consider the plea offer and review discovery. Another status hearing was set for Aug. 4.

At least 13 people have entered guilty pleas, according to a CNN count. Jackson told both sides to continue working towards a resolution, noting that Dresch had not been accused of being an organizer of the Capitol riots, or committing any violent acts that day.

“I think it’s helpful to try to differentiate the more dangerous individuals and the more culpable individuals from the other individuals in trying to decide what charges are appropriate for plea,” she said. “I’m sure that’s what the government’s doing, but I do think for the parties to continue to have conversations about this is a useful thing.”

The other Copper Country resident charged in connection with Jan. 6, Jeremy Sorvisto of Hancock, appeared for a status hearing Friday.

Jackson approved the government’s request to disclose grand jury proceedings, as well as sealed materials, to Sorvisto’s defense as part of discovery. Sorvisto signed a restrictive order governing how the material could be viewed and used.

Sorvisto’s next status hearing was set for Sept. 3.

Dresch remains lodged in jail after Jackson denied his request to be released on bond. Dresch has appealed the ruling. Sorvisto was released on personal recognizance.
