Lakeshore Center dock collapses

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette

A concrete dock at the Lakeshore Center suffered a partial collapse Wednesday afternoon. Cracking and shifting had already been spotted at the dock, which was under surveillance, Michigan Technological University said in a release. Foot traffic on the dock had already been restricted two weeks ago. Michigan Tech Public Safety and Police Services, as well as UP Engineers and Architects, responded immediately after the collapse, Tech said.

Initial reports indicate no damage to the Lakeshore Center, which houses some administrative functions for Tech. As a precautionary measure, employees at the Lakeshore Center will work from home for 10 to 14 days until repairs are finished. Only people assessing and repairing the damage are allowed on-site.
