Sorvisto pleads guilty to Jan. 6 charge: Will be sentenced on one misdemeanor count
WASHINGTON — The remaining local defendant pleaded guilty to participating in the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot in federal court Friday.
Jeremy Sorvisto, 37, of Hancock pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building. Three other misdemeanor charges — entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly conduct in a Capitol building — were dismissed.
A former grade school classmate of Sorvisto’s fiancee, Ashley Aho, submitted a tip to the FBI in January showing Instagram posts Aho made taken during their road trip to Washington. Surveillance video from the hotel where the other local Jan. 6 defendant, Karl Dresch of Calumet, was staying, also showed a Dresch entering the building with a person matching Sorvisto’s description. Dresch was sentenced to six months in jail — effectively time served — last month.
Other photos Aho sent showed Sorvisto inside the “Crypt” area of the Capitol building, and later drinking a beer on the front steps.
Sorvisto will also pay $500 restitution toward the total damage to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, put at $1.5 million.
Sorvisto also agreed to be interviewed by authorities regarding the events of Jan. 6 and making his social media accounts available to them.
Sentencing will take place 9:30 a.m. Nov. 19 by videoconference. Judge Amy Berman Jackson said she needed to see a presentence report beforehand.
