Calumet’s Halloween event expands this year
Photo courtesy of Main Street Calumet Main Street Calumet’s annual Halloween Trunk-or-Treat was altered last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, but in 2019, it was a huge success, as is demonstrated by Superior Caregivers. Last year, Trunk-or-Treat was replaced with a scavenger hunt, with the Calumet Theatre hosting games on the lawn. As a result of that, this Halloween’s Trunk-or-Treat has been hugely expanded and events and festivities will run from noon to 7 p.m., and include pumpkin carving.
CALUMET — Downtown Halloween festivities have been expanded to more than Trunk-or-Treat for 2021, said Leah Polzien, executive director of Main Street Calumet, who hosts the annual event.
“In years past the event was a trunk-or-treat, with area residents and businesses handing out candy from decorated vehicles and storefronts in the downtown district,” said Polzien.
Last year, with 2020 COVID-19 restrictions in place,, Trunk-or-Treat was replaced with a scavenger hunt, and the Calumet Theatre hosted games on the lawn, she said.
“This year, due to interest from the Calumet Theatre Board, Calumet Village Trustee Elise Matz, and the Keweenaw Heritage Center,” said Polzien, “all three components will take place — plus pumpkin carving.”
The schedule for the seven hour event is as follows:
— Pumpkin Carving, Noon to 7pm at the Keweenaw Heritage Center. BYO pumpkin or pick one of the 80 provided by IncredibleBank and Snyder Drug! Pumpkins will be lit and displayed on the Heritage Center steps following the carving event (7-10 p.m.).
— Carnival Games at the Calumet Theatre, 4-6 p.m.. The Calumet Theatre Board will host games on the lawn next to the Calumet Theatre (or inside depending on the weather).
— SCARE-venger Hunt, 4-7 p.m. Pick up your Scavenger Hunt Card at the Main Street Calumet booth next to the Calumet Theatre, mark your finds and return the completed card to be entered into a drawing for a great prize.
— Trunk-or-Treat, 5-7 p.m. Children are invited to trick-or-treat at participating downtown businesses and in the greenspace next to the Calumet Theatre (farmers market location), said Polzien. Community members and businesses are welcome to decorate a vehicle and hand out candy at this location. Set-up for those wishing to hand out candy begins at 3:30 p.m. RSVP for those handing out candy is appreciated but not required to info@mainstreetcalumet.com.
