HANCOCK -- A former Michigan Technological University student was arraigned Monday on 12 counts after being arrested for alleged possession of child pornography.

Dominic Zavaglia, 22, of Iron River, Wisconsin, was arrested by the Hancock Police Department Monday, almost two months after police acted on a search warrant at his residence in Hancock. Zavaglia had lived there while attending Michigan Technological University, from which he graduated in December.

Police had received information that Zavaglia may have possessed child pornography. With the assistance of the Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit, more than 1,000 videos and images suspected to be child sexually abusive material were recovered from Zavaglia's devices, the Hancock Police Department said in a press release.

Zavaglia was arraigned in 97th District Court Monday on three counts of aggravated child sexually abusive activity, a 25-year felony; three counts of using a computer to commit a crime, punishable by 20 years to life; three counts of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material, a 10-year felony; and three additional counts of using computers to commit a crime, a 10- to 20-year felony.

Zavaglia was released from custody after posting a $250,000 bond.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. March 4.
