Crash kills Calumet man Wednesday
CALUMET TOWNSHIP — A Calumet man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on M-26 in Calumet Township Wednesday night.
Michigan State Police Calumet Post troopers responded about 5:50 p.m. to the scene, near Henwood Road.
Troopers determined the 27-year-old Calumet man had crossed the center line on a curve in the highway for unknown reasons while driving south on M-26. His vehicle collided head-on with a northbound vehicle occupied by a 79-year-old female driver and 72-year-old female passenger.
The 27-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The female driver of the second vehicle had to be extricated from her vehicle by the Calumet Township Fire Department. She was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital before being transferred to UP Health Systems Marquette for further treatment. The female passenger was also treated at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.
The crash remains under investigation. A Michigan State Police advanced accident investigator was called to assist.
Troopers were assisted by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Calumet Township Fire Department, Lake Linden Fire Department, Mercy EMS and Superior Service Towing.
