Fog forces ship cancellation

People walk back to shore along the causeway at White City Wednesday morning after learning the Viking Octantis cruise ship had again canceled its trip to the Keweenaw. Viking Cruises made the decision based on fog and high wind advisories, the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce announced Wednesday morning. Its first scheduled visit to the Keweenaw was also canceled over wind concerns. Octantis had been anticipated to dock in the Portage Canal near Dollar Bay, after which passengers would be ferried in muster boats to Bridgeview Park in Houghton. The spot near the South Entry had been expected to be one of the best vantage points from which to see the 665-foot ship approach; its foghorn could be heard, but it was obscured by thick fog. The Octantis is scheduled to make five more stops in the Keweenaw this summer, the first coming July 11. (Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette)
