Houghton County COVID-19 update

HOUGHTON — Houghton County saw its COVID-19 numbers rise over the past week, while new cases again held relatively steady in Baraga and Keweenaw counties, according to state data Tuesday.

Houghton County had 21 confirmed positives since Oct. 4, 11 more cases than a week earlier. Baraga County reported nine new confirmed cases, up two from a week ago, and Keweenaw County had only one new case in the past seven days.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday added 216 confirmed positives since Oct. 4 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 43 in Marquette County; 32 in Delta and Houghton counties; 22 in Menominee County; 18 in Chippewa County; 13 in Gogebic County; 10 in Iron and Mackinac counties; nine in Dickinson, Baraga and Ontongon counties; five in Alger County; two in Schoolcraft County; and one in Keweenaw and Luce counties. The state recorded no new virus-related deaths in the Upper Peninsula for the week.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 59,972 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 916 deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 564 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 14 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 757 confirmed cases and 860 probable, 15 confirmed deaths and two probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,098 confirmed, 127 probable and 40 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,222 confirmed, 803 probable and eight deaths, eight probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,269 confirmed cases and 796 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,888 confirmed cases and 957 probable, 31 deaths and four probable; Baraga County, 1,970 confirmed cases, 411 probable and 55 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,925 confirmed cases and 391 probable, 78 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,312 confirmed cases and 616 probable, 43 deaths and 31 probable; Chippewa County, 3,996 confirmed cases and 5,851 probable, and 91 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 4,492 confirmed cases, 2,041 probable and 63 deaths, 12 probable; Dickinson County, 5,776 confirmed cases and 2,893 probable, 94 deaths and 24 probable; Houghton County, 7,861 confirmed cases, 1,211 probable, 92 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,693 confirmed cases and 2,885 probable, 139 deaths and 27 probable; and Marquette County, 14,149 confirmed cases, 3,854 probable and 139 deaths, 15 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Tuesday had 12,548 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Oct. 4, or an average of about 1,793 cases per day for the week, for a total of 2,861,595 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that time period added 152 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 38,919.
