Suspect in Ariz. murder to undergo competency evaluation
PHOENIX — A former Hancock resident accused of murdering a former Lake Linden resident in Arizona in March will undergo a mental health evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.
Elliot Bennett, 19, of Lake Havasu City had been scheduled to stand trial in November for allegedly fatally shooting Jacques Bourdeau, 44 at Bordeau’s house in Mesa. That date and others in the case were vacated by the July 24 decision in Maricopa County Superior Court.
The case was transferred to Rule 11 Commissioner’s Court for further hearings related to Bennett’s competency. Two doctors will assess Bennett to determine if he understands the nature of the court proceedings.
Bennett is charged with three felonies: first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and endangerment. If found guilty on the murder charge, he could be sentenced to up to life in prison.
Witnesses in Bourdeau’s house reported hearing sounds of gunfire outside when Bennett arrived at the house before Bourdeau ran inside and locked the door, according to the incident report. Bennett then broke in and found Bourdeau in the bathroom, shooting him, witnesses said.
Police tracked a vehicle matching one seen near the house on security footage to the house Bennett shared with his parents in Lake Havasu City. He was arrested two days later.
