Ontonagon County Fair announces weekend events

The annual Ontonagon County Fair, held at the Adventure Mountain Fairgrounds in Greenland, Michigan, has announced their 2024 event lineup. A horse show, laser tag, bouncy house and more will all be featured at this year’s fair. Festivities will begin at noon Friday, and run until 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is five dollars for attendees ages six and up.

On Saturday, there will be a free bouncy house and free laser tag with Respawn Tactical. These events are sponsored in part by the Porcupine Mountains Visitors’ Bureau. The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will offer fishing activities beginning at 10 a.m. All youth are invited to attend the fair’s livestock show at 11 a.m., where they’ll have the chance to learn how to show an animal themselves. Shortly after, the Ninja Obstacle Course, which offers an exciting mini-adventure, will begin at 3 p.m. Participants under 18 will need a parent or guardian signature to participate.

One of the main highlights of Saturday is the Cattle Sorting event. This exciting show features teams of riders on horseback moving cattle from one pen to another in a specific order, with a time limit. Registration opens at 10 a.m., and costs $50 per rider. The event has a 60/40 payout, along with prizes for first, second and third place. Sorting begins at 11 a.m.

After having their faces painted and picking out a balloon animal, fairgoers can stop by the 7 Wonders Chuckwagon to grab a bite to eat. Saturday afternoon will also include a mock rodeo and a coin scramble, sponsored by Citizens State. Saturday’s fun will end with the Adventure Mountain Climb at 4:30.

Participants will meet at the bottom of the hill on the fairgrounds at 4:30 p.m. for the Adventure Mountain Climb-Challenge the Hill. There will be first-place winners in categories 4 and under, 5 to 8, 9 to 12, 13 to 17, adult men and adult women. Water will be provided to all participants, donated by Settler’s Co-op. No registration is needed.

Sunday’s events include a Horse Speed Show and Tractor Pull. There will also be an Animal Competition and Home Economics Competition with Youth and Adult categories. Fair entries for both competitions must be dropped off at the fairgrounds by 6 p.m. on July 26. The Animal Competition will include Dairy, Beef Cattle, Goat, Sheep, Swine, Rabbit, Poultry, and Llama/Alpaca Divisions. The Home Economics Competition accepts entries for Needlework, Foods, Art, Farm Crops, and Floriculture. Only one entry per class is allowed, and the competitions are only open to Ontonagon County residents.

Winners will be awarded with ribbons and, in some categories, cash prizes. Participants over 18 years are also eligible to win the title of “Top Fair Exhibitor”, and youth can win the “Junior Top Fair Exhibitor” prize. Full entry information for the competitions is available on the Ontonagon County Fair’s Facebook page. Those who submit food entries are encouraged to include recipes.
