HOUGHTON COUNTY — The seventh annual Farm Tour is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 15, from noon to 4 p.m.
“As you may know, Keweenaw Co-op has traditionally organized a Farm Tour in September, offering our community a unique opportunity to connect with local farms,” Ariele Pizzo, marketing and outreach coordinator at the Keweenaw Co-op, said in a Wednesday release.
This year, the Co-op is not hosting the event, but several local farms are carrying on the tradition.
The public will have the opportunity to visit six farms in the area, including:
* Apple Acres Farm: Apple Acres Farm is an off-grid, solar-powered, family farm located on 14 acres on Lahti Road, just minutes from downtown Houghton, the Michigan Tech Trails, and the Keweenaw Peninsula.
* North Harvest SCA: A two- acre farm on Tikkanen Road, in Calumet Township, that uses sustainable practices to grow nutritious, high quality vegetables, berries, herbs, and cut flowers.
* Whispering Wild Market Farm: featuring pastured pork, fruits and vegetables, chickens and ducks for free-range eggs and goats and lambs, on Misery Bar Road, in Toivola.
* Ghost House Farm, located on Boston Road, in Franklin township.
* Troemner Family Farm, on Larson Road, in Adams Township.
* Big Goat Farm is a small women-owned dairy goat farm, located on Lahti Road.
This special event allows attendees to purchase fresh produce and value-added goods directly from the source, while also enjoying guided or self-guided tours of the farms, the release says. This is an excellent chance to connect with the land and learn about the sustainable practices. Each farm offers its own unique experience,
This event not only supports local farmers but also offers an educational experience, shedding light on the processes behind the food we eat, the release says. Whether you’re a local resident or just passing through, this is a must-see opportunity to enjoy the best of what Keweenaw agriculture has to offer.
