HOUGHTON — Below are unofficial election results throughout the Copper Country from Tuesday’s election.

12th Circuit Court

Judge Brittany Bulleit (14,142) was elected to a partial term ending Jan. 1, 2027 for the circuit court, which covers Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw counties. 

Baraga County

County officials Prosecutor Joseph O’Leary (Republican, 3,064), Sheriff Joe Brogan (R, 3,218), Clerk Wendy Goodreau (R, 3,288), Treasurer Jill Tollefson (R, 3,278), Mine Inspector Joseph Gabe (R, 3,198) and Probate Court Judge Tim Brennan (2,803) ran unopposed. So did District 1 Commissioner James Niemela (R, 660), District 2 Commissioner Brad Dakota (R, 483), District 3 Commissioner Craig Kent (R, 694), District 4 Commissioner William Menge (R, 749) and District 5 Commissioner Chad Cichosz (R, 604) who were elected to four-year terms.

Houghton County

Sheriff Joshua Saaranen (R, 13,100) defeated Roger Sullivan (no party affiliation, 3,263). Clerk Jennifer Kelly (Democratic, 12,904) defeated write-in challenger Teresa Kariniemi; there were 709 write-in votes. Prosecutor Dan Helmer (R, 13,720), Treasurer Lisa Mattila (D, 11,996), Mine Inspector Tom Wright (11,514), Drain Commissioner John Pekkala (D, 11,571) and Probate Court Judge Fraser Strome (11,333) ran unopposed.

In the only contested county board race, Republican District 2 incumbent Joel Keranen defeated Democratic challenger Casey VerBerkmoes 2,809-1,474. The other commissioners — District 2 Chair Tom Tikkanen (R, 2,957), District 3 Commissioner Glenn Anderson (D, 2,732), District 4 Commissioner Gretchen Janssen (D, 1,344) and District 5 Vice Chair Roy Britz (R, 3,628) — ran unopposed.

Keweenaw County 

In the county board race, District 1 Commissioner Don Piche (R, 213) defeated challenger AJ Kern (NPA, 140). In District 3, Commissioner Del Rajala (R, 198) defeated write-in candidate John Kaura. District 2 Commissioner Michael LaMotte (NPA, 224), District 4 Commissioner Bob DeMarois (D, 168) and District 5 Commissioner Randy Eckloff (R, 215) ran unopposed.

Prosecuting Attorney Charles Miller (D, 1,017), Sheriff Curt Pennala (R, 1,258), Clerk and Register of Deeds Julie Carlson (R, 1,269), Treasurer Eric Hermanson (R, 1,235), Mine Inspector John Cima (NPA, 1,091), County Road Commissioner Richard Olson (R, 1,194) and Keweenaw County Probate Court Judge Keith DeForge (988) ran unopposed.

A .5-mill, four-year millage for county zoning administration failed 673-849. A 0.5-mill, five-year millage for police protection — .4899-mill renewal and 0.101-mill Headlee restoration — passed 958-575. 

Ontonagon County

Sheriff Dale Rantala (D, 2,557), Clerk & Register of Deeds Stacy Preiss (D, 2,507), Treasurer Michele Smith (D, 2,390) and Probate Court Judge Michael Findlay (2,195) ran unopposed. On the county board, in District 5 Ron Store (R, 496) defeated Marlene Broemer (D, 302) a four-year term. District 1 Commissioner John Cane (NPA, 460), District 2 Commissioner Richard Bourdeau (D, 508), District 3 Commissioner Robert Nousiainen (R, 593) and District 4 Commissioner Carl Nykanen (D, 480) ran unopposed for four-year terms.

Voters approved a 0.15-mill, four-year millage renewal for maintaining the animal shelter operated by Ontonagon County Animal Protection 2,691-776.

Baraga County

Village of Baraga

President Scott Koski (287) and Trustees Jeannine Mayo (251) and Tim Olson (249) ran unopposed.

Village of L’Anse

President Ronald Ervast (671) and Trustees Christopher Miller (425), Ryan Perrigo (398) and Jason VanStraten (536) ran unopposed.

Arvon Township 

Supervisor Jay Fish (R, 309), Clerk Lisa Mae Marinich (R, 318), Treasurer Krystal Eliason (R, 316), Trustees Keith Erickson (R, 307) and Robert Janda (R, 305) ran unopposed.

Baraga Township

Supervisor George Danielson (R, 1,056), Clerk Michelle Fish (R, 1,077), Treasurer Catherine Wadaga (R, 1,079) and Trustees Abby Bergerson (D, 595) and Catherine Dompier (R, 948) ran unopposed.

Covington Township 

Supervisor Amber Franti (R, 215), Clerk Amy Leaf (R, 216), Treasurer Lisa Karcher (D, 190), and Trustees Laurie Ahola (R, 207) and Michael Schultz (NPA, 104) ran unopposed.

L’Anse Township

Supervisor Peter Magaraggia (R, 1,476), Clerk Kristin Kahler (NPA, 1,247), Treasurer Sarah Solberg (NPA, 1,164), tTrustees Shelley Lloyd (R, 1,379) and Wallace Sweeney (NPA, 780), and Constables John Robillard (D, 974) and Jennie Nordstrom (R, 1,304) ran unopposed.

Spurr Township

Supervisor Jason Killoran (NPA, 149), Clerk Jessica Omernick (NPA, 143), Treasurer Barbara Wilson (NPA, 138), and Trustees Dennis Bentti (NPA, 123) and Joel LePage (NPA, 124) ran unopposed.

Arvon Township Schools

Mary DeLine (230), Linda Griffith (227) and Natalie Wahmoff (229) ran unopposed. 

A four-year, 18-mill school operating millage passed 282-83. 

Baraga Area Schools 

Megan Haataja (839) and Steve Jahfetson (893) ran unopposed. 

L’Anse Area Schools

Amanda Nordstrom (1,440) and Katie Waara (1,397) were elected to six-year terms. Nicole Frisk (1,618) was elected to a partial term ending Dec. 31, 2026. 

N.I.C.E. Community District

Jim Gray (117 in Baraga County) and Derrick Magnuson (111 in Baraga County) ran unopposed. The district is primarily in Marquette County, though it extends into Baraga County’s Spurr Township as well. 

Houghton County

(local races)

City of Hancock

In Ward 3, Laura Givens defeated Ryan Tanner 446-145. Councilor Amanda Lounibos (1,209) and Mayor Kurt Rickard (1,118) were elected to at-large seats for partial terms ending Nov. 3, 2026. Ward 1 Councilor Ron Blau (410) ran unopposed. 

In Ward 2, Dean Woodbeck was elected as a write-in candidate; write-ins received 88 votes in the ward.

City of Houghton

Virginia Cole (1,094), Philip Foltz (955), Brian Irizarry (1,020) defeated Brendan Leddy (936) for three seats. 

Adams Township

Supervisor Gerald Heikkinen (D, 883), Clerk Debra Pindral (D, 912), Treasurer Tracy Immonen (D, 1,130) and Trustees Paul Eister (R, 902) and Diane Keranen (R, 1,053) ran unopposed.

Calumet Township

In the trustee race, Gary Lassila (R, 2,225), Eugene Londo (R, 1,966), Jeff West (R, 2,044) and David Yeo (R, 2,119) defeated Brent Eskola (D, 1,284) in the race for four seats. Supervisor Timothy Gasperich (R, 2,546), Clerk Robin Hicks (R, 2,544) and Treasurer Lana Hyrkas (R, 2,569) ran unopposed.

Chassell Township 

In the supervisor race, Lynn Gierke (NPA) defeated David Mattson (NPA) 646-454. Clerk Bethany Baetsen (NPA, 757), Treasurer Kelly Holmes (NPA, 788) and Trustees Curt Judson (NPA, 622) and Daniel Palosaari (NPA, 763) ran unopposed.

Voters also approved two millages. A 2-mill, four-year millage renewal for road improvement passed 753 to 400. A 1-mill, four-year millage renewal for fire protection and prevention passed 963 to 207.

Duncan Township

Supervisor Laurie Jo Houts (NPA, 72), Clerk Kathleen Allen (NPA, 110), Treasurer Sandra Pitkanen (NPA, 97) and Trustees Lon Houts (NPA, 61) and Theodore Pitkanen (NPA, 60) ran unopposed.

Elm River Township

Supervisor John Reynolds (NPA, 135), Clerk Sherri Brandt (D, 130), Cheryl Reynolds (NPA, 138) and Trustees Joseph Romano (NPA, 110) and David Saari (NPA, 114) ran unopposed.

A 1.9589-mill, four-year general fund millage renewal passed 130 to 28. A .9794-mill, four-year general services millage passed 130 to 25. A 1-mill, four-year fire millage renewal passed 142 to 16. A 1-mill, four-year road millage renewal passed 136 to 19. A 1-mill, two-year millage for a used fire apparatus and equipment to update more than 30-year-old mini pumper and equipment passed 126 to 33. 

Franklin Township

Supervisor Mary Sears (NPA, 544), Clerk Elizabeth Aho (R, 682), Treasurer Rachel Sears (NPA, 495) and Trustees DJ Dulong (R, 650) and Lawrence Julio (R, 577) ran unopposed.

Hancock Township

Supervisor Michael Young (R, 277), Clerk Amy Jo Maki (R, 287), Treasurer James Moore (NPA, 232) and Trustees Connie Pietila (R, 261) and Ronald Racine Sr. (R, 249) ran unopposed.

Laird Township

Supervisor Patricia Spencer (D, 171), Clerk Robin Henry (R, 2567), Treasurer Nicole Krajnak (R, 255), Trustee John Juntunen (R, 253) and Constable Paul Peterson (R, 256) ran unopposed. Write-in candidates Jeffrey Scott Ploskonka and Sarah Louise Hiltunen sought a second trustee position, receiving a combined 54 votes. Individual results will not be known until canvassing is complete.  

Osceola Township

Supervisor Mark Halkola (NPA, 650), Clerk Christa Gardner (R, 846), Treasurer Christina Gardner (NPA, 632) and Trustees Donald Wareham (D, 478) and Aaron Janke (R, 731) ran unopposed.

Portage Township

In the supervisor race, Brandon Scholie (R) defeated Bruce Petersen (D) 1,059-798. In the trustee race, Dale Belanger (R, 1,004), Janelle Datto (R, 1,107), Nicholas Lanctot (R, 1,010) and Amber Voght (D, 792) were elected to four trustee seats, defeating Peggy Lee Anderson (D, 710), John Ollila (D, 727) and Keith Wanhaaho (D, 614). Clerk Amy Skewes (R, 1,415), Treasurer Betsy Smith (D, 1,104) and Constables Roy Britz (R, 1,309) and Robert Laux (R, 1,151) ran unopposed.

Quincy Township

Supervisor Dennis Raasio (R, 152), Clerk Beth Helminen (R, 154), Treasurer Cheri Raasio (R, 153) and Trustees Chris Kangas (D, 74) and Michael Galetto (R, 149) ran unopposed.

Schoolcraft Township

Supervisor Josh Loukus (R, 871), Clerk Betty Antilla (R, 907), Treasurer Robert Wareham (D, 718) and Trustees Susan Marcotte (D, 564) and William Heide (R, 775) ran unopposed.

Stanton Township

In the supervisor race, Marty Rajala (R, 529) defeated Mike Pionke (NPA, 430). In the trustee race, Mark Haataja (R, 569) and James Heinonen (R, 562) defeated Gerald Campbell (NPA, 158), John Mattila (NPA, 240) and Melissa Naasko (NPA, 167) for two seats. Clerk Tina Hatman (NPA, 701) and Treasurer Lori Anderson (R, 820) ran unopposed.

Torch Lake Township

Supervisor Brian Cadwell (D, 773), Clerk Lou Ambuehl (R, 983), Treasurer Kathryn Moore (D, 765) and Trustees Scott Sapino (D, 629) and Tim Reitz (NPA, 477) ran unopposed.

Village of Calumet 

President Robert Tarvis, Jr. (200) ran unopposed. Trustees Wyatt Behm (146), Matt L’Esperance (128) and James Tercha (138) were elected to four-year terms. Kelly Ryan defeated Virginia Dwyer 165-71 for a partial trustee term ending Nov. 30, 2026. 

Village of Copper City

Clerk Carol Wiitanen (69) and Trustees Alecia Gariepy (65), Kim Spelich (56) and David Strang (44) ran unopposed.

Village of Laurium

President John Sullivan (715), Clerk Mary Crampton (711) and Treasurer Jon Koskiniemi (732) ran unopposed. In the trustee race, Andrew Erickson (376), Jennifer Jenich-Laplander (496), and Wes Pietila (386) were elected to three four-year terms, defeating John Galbraith (271) and Dale Ninko (201). Erickson also ran as a write-in candidate for a partial term ending Nov. 20, 2026; write-ins received 26 votes.

Village of Lake Linden

President Glenn Schuldt (371) and Trustees John Codere (333), Allan Hoffman (308) and Jason Reese (278) ran unopposed.

Village of South Range

In the presidential race, George Eakin defeated Terry Parolini 185-142. In the trustee race, Greg Harkonen (216), Jeffrey Hill (181) and Timothy Korby (171) ran unopposed for four-year terms. Justin Marier (270) was elected to a partial term ending Nov. 3, 2026. Treasurer Lindsay Balma (266) ran unopposed.

Adams Township School District

Kristen Archambeau (792) and Darren Niemi (804) were elected to six-year terms.

Public Schools of

Calumet, Laurium

& Keweenaw

Phyllis Locatelli (2,323) and Adam Loukus (1,717) defeated Elizabeth Anderson (1,528) and Ryan Heinonen (1,351) for two seats.

Chassell Township Schools

Randal Danison (563), Peter Torola (570), and Mark Smith (514) were elected to three seats for four-year terms. Tanya Etelmaki (608) and Carl Olson (620) were elected to partial terms ending Dec. 31, 2026. 

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Area Schools

David Maki (703) ran unopposed. A 18-mill, four-year operating millage passed 574-410.

Elm River Township Schools

Write-ins Joyce Arlene Pirhonen and Jared Daniel Johnson ran for a seat on the school board, garnering a combined 50 votes; individual tallies will not be known until canvassing is complete. An 18-mill, five-year operating millage proposal — renewing 17.6094 mills and adding .3906 mills lost in Headlee rollbacks — passed 132 to 20.

Hancock Public Schools

Emilie Lancour (2,116) and Rebecca Ylitalo (1,872) were elected to four-year terms. Charles Klein (1,953), Michael Lancour (1,868) and Taylor Paul (1,633) were elected to a partial term ending Dec. 31, 2026.

Houghton-Portage Township Schools

Brad Baltensperger (1,229) and Michael Salmi (1,370) defeated Nels Christopherson (1,050), and Jason Evans (1,226) for two six-year terms.

A $23 million, 30-year bond proposal for building improvements including an early childhood center and addition to the elementary school passed 1,820-1,790. 

Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools

Jennifer Beaudette (1,029) and Melissa Corrigan (1,066) defeated Beth Krause (652) for two six-year terms. David Anderson (1,384) was elected to a partial term ending Dec. 31, 2026. 

Stanton Township Schools

Jill Efraimson (520) and Nathan Kinnunen (605) ran unopposed.

Keweenaw County

(local races)

Allouez Township

Supervisor Mark Aho (R, 765), Clerk Jesse Patrick (R, 783), Treasurer Julie Newman (R, 777) and Trustees Kenneth Johnson (R, 683) and Robert Tarvis (R, 674) ran unopposed.

Eagle Harbor

Township

Supervisor Rich Probst Jr. (R, 183), Clerk Jeane Olson (D, 196), Treasurer Patty Asselin (R, 181) and Trustees Richard Schaefer (R, 163) and Bryce Holden (NPA, 122) ran unopposed.

Grant Township

In the trustee race, Art Davis (D, 122) and Staci Gibson-Kisiel (NPA, 126) defeated Bob Pokorski (NPA, 110) for two seats. Supervisor Meg North (D, 170) and Clerk Cheryl Ochodnicky (D, 158) ran unopposed.

Houghton Township

Supervisor Robby Fischer (R, 55) and Trustees Thomas Hall (R, 57) and Jim Huovinen (NPA, 39) ran unopposed.

Sherman Township

In the supervisor race, John Wilhelm (NPA, 43) defeated Blake Fountain (NPA, 39). In the trustee race, Jeremy Lauren (NPA, 42) and Sondi Mathews (NPA, 55) defeated Frank Kastelic (NPA, 33) for two seats. Clerk JT Reno (NPA, 64) and Treasurer Karen Turner (NPA, 69) ran unopposed.

Village of Ahmeek

President Susan Gherna (53), Clerk Amy Kumpula (47), Treasurer Coreen Balbough (53) and Trustees Michael DeFina (29), Dave Maki (33) and Frank Spagnotti (35) ran unopposed.

Grant Township School District

Christine Musiel (159) and Carolyn Stevens (155) ran unopposed.

Village of Ontonagon

In the president race, Pamela Coey defeated Norman Pestka 371-329. Trustees Lyle Perry (328), Mike Rebholz (305) and Matt Wiesen (386) ran unopposed for four-year terms.

Bergland Township

In the trustee race, Jerald Wuorenmaa (D, 118) and John Berglund Jr. (NPA, 193) defeated Sue Barton (NPA, 83) for two seats. Supervisor Jack Otlewis (R, 239), Clerk Christy Franklin (R, 257), Treasurer Shana Lundwall (R, 165) ran unopposed.

Bohemia Township

Supervisor Angela Foley (NPA, 33), Clerk Nicole DeHaan (NPA, 33), Treasurer Carrie Erickson (NPA, 37) and Trustees Brian Taavola (37) and Danny Taavola (31) ran unopposed.

A 1-mill, 10-year operating millage renewal passed 36-12. A 1-mill, 10-year road millage renewal passed 38-9.

Carp Lake Township

In the trustee race, Gary Monville (R, 222) and Mike Hinrichs (NPA, 149) defeated Marcus Lee Bierman (NPA, 126) for two seats. Supervisor Homer Colclasure (R, 273) and Clerk Marty Hinrichs (NPA, 222) ran unopposed. Suzanne Barnaby ran as a write-in candidate for treasurer; there were 14 write-in votes. Library Board Directors Barbara Braithwaite (202), Nancy Hartman (212), Deb Koch (163), Jane Rasmussen (175), Sandra Richardson (187) and Rocky Windsor (229) ran unopposed. 

Greenland Township

In the treasurer race, Katie Carlson-Lynch (NPA) defeated Shannon Kin (NPA) for a four-year term 207-144. Supervisor Jennifer Neumann (NPA, 285), Clerk Corrie Kaarto (NPA, 325) and Trustees Kevin Antilla (NPA, 251) and Randy Kemppainen (NPA, 257) ran unopposed.

Haight Township

Supervisor Joseph Pietila (D, 87), Clerk Steve Aho (NPA, 89), Treasurer Roxy Williams (R, 99) and Trustees Gerald Mattson (D, 75) and Doug Williams (R, 73) ran unopposed.

Interior Township

Supervisor Nikki Laitala (NPA, 111), Clerk Wade Boan (NPA, 116), Treasurer Melanie Pelkola (NPA, 130) and Trustees Paul Besonen (D, 86) and Kris Peltola (R, 127) ran unopposed.

Matchwood Township

Supervisor Neil Wagner (D, 37), Clerk Gerald Kitzman (D, 39), Treasurer Lorraine Warsop (NPA, 28) and Trustees Laura Stewart (D, 24) and Barbara Powell (R, 36) ran unopposed.

McMillan Township

Supervisor Dan Staff Sr. (NPA, 195), Clerk Kay Richter (NPA, 196), Treasurer Jacqueline Pintar (NPA, 196) and Trustees Mike Urbis (NPA, 175) and Mark Voigt (NPA, 189) ran unopposed. For the library board, Linnea Waters, Raymond Rigoni Jr., Alice Leno, Mary Carol Coleman and Dianne Hardes ran as write-ins for six years, garnering a total of 77 votes.

Ontonagon Township

Supervisor Steve Store (R, 1,022), Clerk Pam Chabot (R, 1,079), Treasurer Deborah Miles (R, 1,050) and Trustees Dennis O’Brien (R, 981) and Kayln Store (R, 864) ran unopposed. For park commissioner, Bob Clark (880), Joshua Drew (859), Jason Clinesmith (937), James Miles (918), Bob Rotundo (774), Deborah Slye (856) and Jason Strelow (809) ran unopposed. For library board director, Karen Bradley (632), Susan Kessler (559), Nancy Morin-Schreiber (538), Kathleen Pragacz (666), Donna Siren (645) and Linda Wadman (637) ran unopposed.

Rockland Township

In the supervisor race, Charles Mott (R) defeated Jason Morgan (Libertarian) 93-35. Clerk Brittany Myllylahti (R, 111), Treasurer Patricia Mott (R, 108), and Trustees Charles Pantti (D, 84) and Becky Pantti (NPA, 78) ran unopposed.

A 0.5-mill, four-year activity center millage renewal passed 92-30. A 3-mill, 10-year general fund and street lighting millage renewal passed 94-29. A 0.5-mill, four-year millage renewal for road construction, blacktopping and sidewalks passed 99-23. 

Stannard Township

Supervisor William Andrus (R, 354), Clerk Crystal Smith (R, 358), Treasurer Jody Hardes (NPA, 278) and Trustee Elise Linna (NPA, 297) ran unopposed.

A 1-mill, seven-year millage renewal for fire protection and emergency services and operations passed 332-66.

Ewen-Trout Creek Consolidated School District

Heather Kay Borseth (912) ran unopposed for one seat. Write-in candidates Matthew Urbis, Luke Basel and Rena Maki ran for another two seats, receiving a combined 450 votes. The individual results were being tallied by Ontonagon County’s Board of Canvassers Wednesday afternoon. 

Ontonagon Area Schools

Carl Lockhart (1,454) and Natalie Morgan (1,115) ran unopposed. 

Gogebic-Ontonagon ISD  

Dayle Jackson and Samantha Schutz ran unopposed, receiving 1,687 and 1,855 votes in Ontonagon County. Each were also on the ballot in Duncan Township in Houghton County, where they received 25 and 27 votes, respectively.
