KEWEENAW COUNTY — A man said only to be in his 50s fell to his death on Saturday in the Manganese Falls area of Grant Township.

According to a Monday morning press release from the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Saturday, deputies were dispatched to the Manganese Falls in response to someone having fallen from the cliff.

The male, whose name is not being released due to privacy for the grieving family, was walking along the path when he fell approximately 25 feet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Deputy who was on scene as part of the investigation said the incident occurred at the top of the waterfall.

“He fell from an elevated area at the top of the falls to the first pool,’ said the deputy, who did not want his name disclosed. “They were in a spot that maybe wasn’t appropriate to be looking over the falls.”

The release states the fall does not appear to be suspicious, as initial investigation suggests an accidental fall.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s office would like to thank all the responding agencies and remind the public to be cautious and know their limits before venturing into the outlying landscapes to enjoy this beautiful area. Also responding to the call, the release states, were the Copper Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, Keweenaw County Search and Rescue, Michigan State Parks and Recreation, and Calumet Township Fire Department.

Starting at $3.50/week.
